"Incredible Causes"
I was invited back for a second day of filming (after appearing in another episode Disastrous Descents on the same series), this time at the home of aviation filming in the UK - Shoot Aviation Studios. Based on a working airfield, these studios are used for just about every aeroplane interior shot in a major UK production, private jet filming...they are the masters of flight related shooting. This time, I assumed the role of the "Canadian Chief Fire Officer". We join the events of December 1985 when a plane crashed in Canada less than one mile after take-off. Many of the passengers were returning military personnel.
This was an entertaining and challenging production; surrounded by mangled aircraft parts, pyrotechnics, smoke, the works. The end result looks terrific. In one of the later shots my job was to retrieve the CVR black box voice recorder from the fiery wreck. I remember the pyrotechnic handler just 'double-checking' that our costume gloves were actually flame retardant; by dangling them in the fire. Thankfully, they were!
